The minute we saw it we knew we had something special but the artist's signature was hard to decipher: we had the first name Max pretty clear, the last name eluded us.  We saw from the labels on the back that the work had passed through the hands of the distinguished André Weil Gallery in Paris. And that led to our discovery of the artist's identity on that gallery's poster of his 1959 one-man show: the celebrated and truly maverick Marseillais painter Max Fabre! We're beyond thrilled.

This painting dates from his association with the movement in France called the New Realists starting in the 1960s, nurtured by such dealers as André Klein.
