A very mid-century take on a 19th century print, definitely a designer piece. It is labeled "R. Debrett (the artist?)... A Bahia (at Bahia)". Bahia was a center of the slave trade, and the European artists who visited this new world were greatly struck by the juxtapositions this society displayed and chronicled it faithfully. In the ferment of the 60s such imagery definitely became part of the liberal sensibility, which is why perhaps it is not so strange to find it as ironic decor. One of three that has come into our hands, this one measures 20" x 13 1/2". (To find the others type in P2366 and P2368.)
