Thonet Bentwood Entry Table F2813
A beautiful example of early twentieth century Viennese design from one of the most consequential furniture makers in history. Thonet patented a method for bending solid beechwood through the use of steam in 1856, revolutionizing furniture production and catapulting the bentwood aesthetic to international fame. This oval-top table rests on a dramatically sculptural base of sinuously curved and looping bentwood legs — a hallmark of Thonet's Art Nouveau period production — demonstrating the full expressive potential of the steam-bending process. Thonet's method, still in use today, involves boiling the wood in a steam boiler to soften it, then attaching a metal band to absorb tensile forces during bending — without which the wood would break.
The oval top shows beautiful warm patina and grain throughout. A striking and collectible piece from the height of Thonet's Belle Époque production, equally at home as a functional entry or side table or as a sculptural object.
