Best known as a painter of Western landscapes and Indians in New Mexico, Arizona, & California, Gay Betts was born into an artistic family (several siblings and parents--Edwin and Jane Betts---were artists). 1903--graduated Art Institute of Chicago, which exhibited her art over many decades. Taught art in California and Cuba. Wrote stories and illustrated many books. Depression WPA artist- she painted dioramas in San Diego and murals in San Francisco.
