Vintage California Republic Bear Flag, c. 1940s–1960s A3486

A well-used example of the California Bear Flag in cotton bunting, printed with the full state design — grizzly walking left over green grass, lone red star at upper left, "CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC" in brown block lettering below. The red stripe is a separate panel, sewn at the bottom. Brass grommets on the hoist.

The field has aged to a warm ivory. Brown toning and scattered staining across the surface, consistent with outdoor use and years of storage — nothing that reads as damage, just honest wear. The printing is clear and intact throughout. No tears, holes, or repairs visible.

The bear's rendering is notably more detailed and naturalistic than the flat, simplified version on modern California flags — a good indicator of mid-century commercial production.
