A Portrait of the Artist's Daughters c.1914 by Jean Mannheim, Oil on Canvas P3602
An incredibly vivid portrait by Jean Mannheim (1861–1945), A Portrait of the Artist's Daughters, circa 1914. The painting depicts the artist's daughter surrounded by an abundant arrangement of lush flowers. Mannheim uses a rich palette with loose, expressive brushwork that gives the flowers and background an atmospheric quality.
About the artist:
Mannheim was a German-born artist who studied in Paris before settling permanently in Pasadena in 1908, where he became an important figure in the Southern California art community. He was a highly regarded portrait painter as well as a landscape artist, and he frequently painted his two daughters, making this intimate family subject particularly appropriate to his body of work.
In 1914, Mannheim was also helping establish the Stickney Memorial School of Fine Arts in Pasadena, where he taught and influenced younger artists. His work was exhibited extensively, and he later received medals at major California expositions.
