An expressive, moody portrait by Kosleck, the German-born Hollywood actor best remembered for playing Nazi villains on screen — a role he took on despite having fled the Nazis himself.
Between film roles, he supported himself as a portrait painter in a loose, impressionist style, counting Marlene Dietrich and Bette Davis among his sitters. This work captures a similar sense of introspection: a red-haired woman with her chin resting on clasped hands, rendered in warm earth tones against a shadowy, striped ground.
