An incredible painting by one of our favorites. This painting captures the gnarled, weathered character of cypress trees shaped by decades of coastal wind, their twisted branches silhouetted against a hazy blue sky and the pale surf beyond.

Harris was an English-born painter who emigrated to Los Angeles with his family in 1903 and became known for his impressionist paintings of California, and particularly for his views of the desert and coastal California. Harris studied with the Impressionist painters Frank Tolles Chamberlin and Hanson Puthuff, and the early modernist Stanton McDonald-Wright, going on to a career that spanned over fifty years of exhibiting throughout Southern and Northern California.

This work comes directly from the estate of Sam Hyde Harris, with the estate stamp present on the reverse of the canvas — a meaningful point of provenance for collectors.
