Barnyard with Chickens by Irv Wyner, Oil on Masonite P3601

An incredible and boldly graphic barnyard scene from Irv Wyner, a longtime Hollywood background artist best known for his work on the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes shorts under Friz Freleng, and later for Disney and Chuck Jones's studio. Wyner worked on Looney Tunes backgrounds through the 1950s before moving into Disney projects in the early 1960s and later contributing to animated specials like The Phantom Tollbooth and Horton Hears a Who!

His animation background shows clearly here in the flattened, stylized forms and confident color blocking — a red barn, chickens roaming around and a man pulling along his child on horseback set against rolling green hills rendered with the same graphic style as some of his film background paintings.

This piece is from one of Wyner's very last collections before his death and came from the artist's official estate.
