Dan Lutz grew up in Illinois. He attended the Chicago Art Institute for four years and in 1931, received the James Nelson Raymond Traveling Fellowship which enabled him to study and paint in Europe. After returning to the United States, he settled in Southern California.

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, he primarily produced watercolors featuring regional subjects. After 1950, he concentrated on abstract works painted with oils on canvas. He taught art at the University of Southern California in the 1930s and at the Chouinard Art Institute in the 1940s. In the 1950s and 1960s, he lectured occasionally, while continuing to paint.
