A luminous view of Thousand Island Lake, tucked high in the Sierra Nevada, captured by California landscape painter Jack Macartney. Circa 1940s.
Macartney trained under noted plein-air artists Edgar Payne, William T. McDermitt, and Sam Hyde Harris, and his handling of light and atmosphere here shows that lineage clearly — the granite peaks rendered in soft violet-grays, sunlit meadow slopes rolling down toward a stand of weathered snags and dark conifers, all mirrored in the still water below.
A California artist active from the early 1900s through the 1970s, Macartney exhibited widely and was a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association. This piece comes to us from an esteemed Santa Barbara estate collection.
