Bjorn Sigurd Ostern is known for his work as a silver jewelry designer and metalsmith. He primarily designed for two silver workshops, including David-Andersen, in Norway, and his own small studio. His work includes Modernist interpretations of traditional Scandinavian motifs along with abstract designs.

Bjorn Sigurd Ostern studied at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Norway from 1956 through 1961, where he received a “Best Student” award. In 1963 a scholarship from de Beers allowed him to study in the United States, and in 1964-1965 he held exhibitions of his work in New York.

He was also, beginning in 1961, an integral part of the talented design and silversmithing team that worked for David-Andersen in Norway during the 1960s. He is known for contributing designs to popular lines such as the “Troll” series made by both the David-Andersen and Uni David-Andersen workshops. Several of Ostern’s modern pendant designs for the Troll series were featured in periodical advertising for David-Andersen in the mid-1960s.

Ostern also made jewelry in his small workshop beginning in the early 1960s. He did design work for Per Killingmo, another Norwegian silver workshop, from 1973 to 1974. He then returned to David-Andersen, where he continued to work through the mid-1980s.
