The Maidu are a Native American people who historically lived in northeastern California, primarily in the areas around the Feather and American Rivers. They are part of the Maiduan language family, and their language, which means "person" in their own language, is also called Maidu. The Maidu are a diverse group, with three main subgroups: Mountain Maidu, Nisenan (or Southern Maidu), and Konkow (or Northwestern Maidu)
