Florence Upson Young (1872–1974) was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, studying under a notable roster of teachers including William Merritt Chase and Nicolai Fechin. She settled in Southern California by the 1920s, eventually making her home and studio in Alhambra — part of the same close-knit community of early California artists based around nearby "Artists' Alley." Her subjects ranged widely across the region's landscape, from desert and mountain scenes to the California missions, and her work is held today in institutions including the Pomona College Museum of Art.
