Don by Frank Tolles Chamberlin (1873–1961), oil on canvas, circa 1936. A finely observed portrait of a young man shown in left-facing profile, rendered in the restrained, classical style characteristic of Chamberlin’s figure work. Chamberlin was a respected American painter, muralist, sculptor, and influential Southern California art teacher. Born in San Francisco, he studied at the Art Students League in New York and later received a scholarship to study at the American Academy in Rome. He moved to Pasadena in 1919 and became an important figure in the California art community, teaching at institutions including Chouinard and Otis Art Institutes.
The reverse bears an artist-estate certification stating that the work is an original oil painting by Frank Tolles Chamberlin, accompanied by the signature of Dorothy Chamberlin, his daughter.
