About the artist
Poole was born in Haddonfield, New Jersey, in 1884 and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz. He lived and worked in Hawaii from 1914–1921, then settled permanently in San Francisco, where he maintained a studio on Montgomery Street. He taught at the California School of Fine Arts and UC Berkeley and became particularly well known as an etcher and landscape painter.
He exhibited extensively with the San Francisco Art Association, had a one-man exhibition at Galerie Beaux Arts in 1929, and participated in the 1935 San Francisco Museum of Art inaugural exhibition and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. During the 1930s he also completed Public Works Administration murals, including a large mural at Roosevelt Junior High School in San Francisco.
