Vintage Spanish Folk Art Bowl, Bull Fight M1992
Vintage Spanish folk art pottery bowl, circa 1940s, featuring a wonderfully expressive hand-painted scene of a rider atop a stylized bull or ox rendered in earthy brown and vibrant emerald green glaze. The primitive linework, rustic earthenware body, and loose freehand decoration give the piece a charming, almost storybook quality characteristic of traditional rural Spanish ceramics of the period.
The imagery strongly reflects Iberian bullfighting and agrarian traditions that have long appeared in Spanish folk pottery, particularly wares produced in ceramic centers such as Talavera de la Reina, Puente del Arzobispo, and various Andalusian workshops. Decorative animal motifs — especially bulls, horses, and riders — became especially popular in mid-century Spanish tourist and export ceramics.
The bowl’s earthy palette and spontaneous brushwork also share qualities with Mediterranean folk pottery traditions found throughout Spain and parts of Mexico, where Spanish ceramic influences carried over through colonial craft traditions. The thick green glaze border is reminiscent of historic lead-glazed earthenware techniques used across Spanish and Hispano-Moresque ceramics for centuries.
Likely handmade and studio-produced rather than factory manufactured, this piece has a beautifully authentic folk quality with visible irregularities and painterly variation that add to its character and charm. An excellent decorative wall piece or shelf display object with strong rustic Mediterranean presence.
Overall vintage condition consistent with age and handmade pottery, including glaze variation, surface wear, and minor imperfections inherent to folk ceramic production.
