Vintage Mexican Candlestick Holder from Tzintzuntzan, Folk Art Angel M1989

Vintage Tzintzuntzan ceramic candlestick holder from Michoacán, Mexico, hand-painted in a beautifully naive folk art style with brown linework over a warm cream clay ground. 

Produced in Tzintzuntzan, one of Mexico’s most historically important pottery centers, this piece reflects the enduring folk ceramic traditions of the Purépecha (Tarascan) people. Tzintzuntzan — whose name means “place of the hummingbirds” — was once the ceremonial capital of the Purépecha Empire and remains internationally recognized for its handcrafted pottery and artisan traditions.

The hand-drawn storytelling imagery and rustic earthenware body are characteristic of mid-century Michoacán folk ceramics, often created in small family workshops using techniques passed down through generations. Similar decorative wares from Tzintzuntzan commonly feature birds, fish, village scenes, and lake life rendered in expressive freehand brushwork. 

Overall very good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with handmade earthenware pottery.
