Tom Conwell - Circus In Town - Watercolor - circa 1950 P2857
We date it from one of the cars on the busy street, clearly a 1949 Caddy. This is a spectacular folk art painting, full of observation and insight, and bursting with all the energy of a post-war America. It really feels like a Saturday night. What is especially notable is the skill with which the artist has conveyed the way the big top would have glowed at night from the lights inside while the show was in progress. We love it.
Measures 26 1/8" x 20 1/4", frame is 29 1/2" x 23 1/2". The matte made out of too-thin paper is a bit ripply, obviously original, but the watercolor itself is in excellent condition, as is the original frame.
