Hector Rascon Hand-Carved Wooden Burro, New Mexican Folk Art M2042
A wonderfully characterful wooden burro by New Mexican folk artist Hector Rascon, signed on the underside. Finished in soft gray with dark accents and expressive eyes, the donkey carries a bundle of miniature logs tied across its back, adding to its rustic charm and playful personality. It is in excellent vintage condition.
Rascon (1957–2017) was a celebrated Northern New Mexico woodcarver who began creating his own work in 1977 after learning the craft from his father-in-law, renowned folk artist Ben Ortega. Working with woods including cottonwood and aspen, Rascon became known for his spirited carvings of animals, saints, and angels. His work reflects the rich Hispano folk-art tradition of New Mexico, where carved burros and other animals have long been beloved subjects. This delightful signed example captures the warmth and humor that make his sculptures so appealing to collectors.
