A truly special and increasingly difficult-to-find piece, this authentic Monterey daybed, circa 1929, is presented in its original old red painted finish.
The daybed has remained in the same ownership since the 1970s, she acquired it from a fraternity brother of the Freemasons. Its longtime owner, now 99 and living in assisted living, recently made the decision to part with this cherished piece so that it could be appreciated, used, and given a new life in another home. It is a piece with a meaningful story and a remarkably well-preserved history of ownership.
What makes this example particularly exceptional is its originality. The old red finish and painted decoration remain intact, with the surface exhibiting the authentic patina, character, and gentle wear one hopes to find in a nearly century-old piece. The decorative floral motif on the headboard remains beautifully visible, while the turned posts, shaped rails, and distinctive construction showcase the charm that has made Monterey furniture so collectible.
