An artist resident of Escondido, California, Lewis Ryan (1894-1982) was an illustrator, block printer, writer, and public benefactor who was born in Austin, Texas and in 1919, moved to California where he lived to be 88 years old. Many of his wood-block illustrations were published in the 1920s and 1930s in the Saturday Evening Post, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, Westways, and the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan attended the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and had a studio in Los Angeles to 1951.
