Lawrence Murphy

Lawrence Murphy “Horses” Litho

Regular price $650.00

Lawrence Murphy signed lithograph of horses and riders. Matte frame is 16.5w x 15h, image itself is 11″w x 8″h.

Born in Denver in 1872, Lawrence Murphy grew up as the son of a wealthy banker who disinherited him after he chose an art career.  So he went to Paris — where he studied at Académie Julian, and in NYC with George Bridgman and Frank DuMond.

He originally came to California in 1915 to attend the Panama Pacific Exposition and decided to stay.  Settling in Los Angeles, he taught at the Art Students League, UCLA, and at the Chouinard Art School from 1926 until his death in 1947.
His work was considered very modern and daring by the art standards of 1915.
