The Winter Coat by Otis Williams, Oil on Canvas P3497

Regular price $2,400.00

The Winter Coat by Otis Williams, circa 1912, is a quietly evocative portrait rendered in oil on canvas. The composition depicts a young boy standing in three-quarter view, gently holding a soft blue hat, his gaze turned inward with a subdued, contemplative expression. Dressed in a heavy brown coat, the figure suggests a moment of transition—perhaps seasonal, perhaps emotional—captured with restraint and sensitivity. Acquired from the official Estate of Otis Williams.

Williams employs a muted, atmospheric palette of cool blues and earthy tones, allowing the figure to emerge softly from the background. The brushwork is delicate and blended, lending the painting a hazy, almost dreamlike quality that aligns with early 20th-century American portrait traditions influenced by Tonalism and academic realism.

Otis Williams (born 1888 in Missouri) later settled in Southern California, where he studied at the School of Art & Design under Louise Garden MacLeod. His work often reflects formal training rooted in traditional figure painting, with an emphasis on mood, structure, and human presence rather than overt narrative.

This piece stands as a compelling example of early American portraiture—intimate, restrained, and deeply human—capturing both the physical likeness and the quiet emotional depth of its subject.
