Storm Clouds of Grand Canyon by James Gulford Swinnerton, Oil on Board P3498`

Regular price $1,900.00

Storm Clouds of Grand Canyon by James Gulford Swinnerton, dating to the 1920s, is a moody and atmospheric landscape capturing the vastness and quiet drama of the American West. Rendered in soft, diffused tones, the composition centers on a distant canyon edge beneath billowing storm clouds, with a small stand of trees perched along a rocky outcrop. Swinnerton’s restrained palette and hazy brushwork evoke shifting light and the sense of an approaching storm, emphasizing mood over detail.

An early California artist and member of the California Impressionist circle, Swinnerton is known for his evocative desert and canyon scenes, often exploring light, weather, and expansive space. This work reflects that sensibility, balancing subtle color transitions with a contemplative, almost dreamlike atmosphere.

This painting was previously sold through Butterfield auction and comes from a Montecito art collection. It is presented in a carved Art Nouveau wood frame that complements the organic forms and tonal qualities of the piece.

Art measures 14" x 16", in frame 17" x 19"
