Native American Cristo late 19th early 20th Century

Regular price $2,200.00

A glorious piece of folk art, forceful and sincere, almost shocking in its realism. This Christ bleeds and suffers on an earthly plane. Mutilated, he bleeds. He is dying. Carved in one of the pueblos in the Rio Grande Valley, possibly Acoma or Laguna, the kachina tradition of wood carving translated to Christian/European iconography. The Christ has actual hair on his head, bound with a leather headband, and his loincloth is of suede. From the collection of the legendary Si Litvinoff.

30″ tall x 18″ wide x 7″ deep. Painted pine. Time has robbed it of its sedile, the support for the Christ’s feet.
