Hand Carved and Painted Statue of a Saint - Late 19th Century A2738
Stands 37" tall x 13" x 9". A beautiful piece of work in very good condition. Possibly Spanish.
A wooden piece has been chipped off the top of the saint's crozier, which is tipped with a tau, signifying authority over a congregation. The book he holds of course is the gospel, which was the main instrument employed by the Church fathers under the authority granted them by Paul (who is usually depicted holding the book but in conjunction with a sword, signifying his early life as an antagonist of the Church, and once converted, subsequently its most militant defender). So we can safely identify this figure as portraying one of the founding fathers of the Faith, if not Paul himself.
