George Petty was an American illustrator known for his series of pin-ups known as Petty Girls which he did for Esquire magazine. The Petty Girl was a coquettish, idealized woman whose legs were unnaturally long, and who was featured on magazine centerfolds, billboards, and calendars for companies such as Ridgid Tools. Born George Brown Petty IV on April 27, 1894 in Abbeville, LA, Petty received his formal training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago under Ruth Van Sickle Ford, before briefly attending the Académie Julian in Paris. Petty’s character was so popular during his lifetime that MGM Studios made a comedy-musical film about her in 1950. The artist died on July 21, 1975 in San Pedro, CA.
