Ralph William Holmes (1876-1963)
Born in La Grange, Illinois on October 1, 1876, Ralph William Holmes was a landscape painter and illustrator who grew up in Illinois and attended Northwestern University (1895-98) and Art Institute of Chicago (1898-1902). After further art study in Paris, he joined the faculty at the Art Institute (1903-12) followed by five years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. In 1918 he moved to Southern California and was active as a muralist in Atascadero and an instructor at Otis Art Institute (1923-48). Holmes died in San Luis Obispo, California on February 6, 1963. His work includes views of Yosemite and Bryce Canyon as well as the desert and rolling hills of Southern California.
