Jorgen Hansen - Man Holding Dove in the Company of His Shadow - Oil on Board 1960s

A mysterious painting, and all the more enthralling for it. Is the veiled figure standing behind the man his Jungian shadow? What does the dove represent? In a very good way we are reminded of the cast of characters belonging to Picasso's Blue Period, but updated to the angst of the mid-century, and suffused with a beautiful melancholy. Jorgen Hansen was born in Chicago, IL on April 26, 1922.  Jorgen was the son of noted painter, Ejnar Hansen.  He had his first solo show at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel at age 12.  During WWII he was a bombardier.  After the war he studied at UC Berkeley, Jepson Art Institute, and USC School of Fine Arts.  He further studied in Paris at L'Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and then completed his degree in fine arts at the University of California at Santa Barbara.  He then taught at Ventura College, served as educational curator at the Santa Barbara Museum of Arts.  For 30 years he taught painting in the Santa Barbara Adult Education program.  He died in Santa Barbara, CA on February 24, 2008.
