Hires Root Beer was created by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires. Introduced in 1876, it was one of the longest continuously made soft drinks in the United States. Hires advertised aggressively, believing "doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody else does."
