Here we have Harris painting a harbor scene with a large cargo vessel rendered in rich, muted tones and an excellent perspective. The painting places the viewer very close to the waterline, looking almost directly into the imposing bow of the ship. This low, frontal perspective makes the vessel appear monumental, while the narrow strip of harbor and water surrounding it gives a sense of depth and scale. Circa 1930.

Harris was an English-born painter who emigrated to Los Angeles with his family in 1903 and became known for his impressionist paintings of California, and particularly for his views of the desert and coastal California. Harris studied with the Impressionist painters Frank Tolles Chamberlin and Hanson Puthuff, and the early modernist Stanton McDonald-Wright, going on to a career that spanned over fifty years of exhibiting throughout Southern and Northern California.

This work comes directly from the estate of Sam Hyde Harris, with the estate stamp present on the reverse of the canvas — a meaningful point of provenance for collectors.

Art measures 20" 24", in frame 26" x 30.75"
