The original American Indian suitcase was this ingenious use of buffalo hide folded in such a way as to keep the elements out and your items in. Usually made in pairs which hung off either side of the horse. This one from the extensive ethnographic collection of the Sacramento Estate. American Indian.

Thought to be material of the Crow tribe.
