Santo Domingo Pueblo, depression era, 'battery bird', recycled material, thunderbird necklace. These were made by Native American artists during the Great Depression as inexpensive souvenir items, made of recycled plastics, broken records, toothbrush handles, the black vulcanite casings to early car batteries, bone, and small amounts of turquoise. The beads they were typically strung with were made of a dense talc-like material.
