DeMille's Male and Female (1919), Paramount starting grooming her to eventually supplant the highly temperamental and troublesome Gloria Swanson. Lila's talent, however, was lighter in weight and, though she enjoyed great popularity in such films as Blood and Sand (1922) with Rudolph Valentino, Another Man's Wife (1924), The Midnight Girl (1925), Love, Live and Laugh (1929) co-starring George Jessel and The Unholy Three (1930) opposite Lon Chaney, Swanson had little to worry about. A series of bad judgments and highly publicized bouts with illness led to Lila's swift decline. She made a few dismal comebacks on stage and in TV soaps in the 1950s but to little fanfare. This terrific portrait, in which the air ace displays the three stars of a Lieutenant General, a rank to which he ascended in short order (1944), perhaps painted for a magazine cover, seems definitely to commemorate the event: one sees the island of Japan, and Mount Fuji, behind him, in flames. It’s a very arresting, even shocking image. Hearst promoted her heavily through his newspapers, and pressured studios to cast her in historical dramas to which she was not suited. For this reason, Davies is better remembered today as Hearst’s mistress and hostess at many lavish events for the Hollywood elite than for her acting. In particular, her name is linked with the 1924 scandal aboard Hearst’s yacht when one of his guests, film producer Thomas Ince, died. In the film Citizen Kane (1940), the title character’s wife – an untalented singer whom tries to promote – was widely assumed to be based on Davies. He first began to use photography only as a medium for recording his paintings. After moving to Laguna Beach, California from Chicago, Illinois in 1925 he found that photography was a more reliable source of income than painting. His photography was encouraged by his friend aviatrix Pancho Barnes, who often posed for him. But the work, though a sketch, is extremely fine. I am going out on a long limb based on other images of his paintings and photographs of the man, that the artist is Rupert Bunny and that it is indeed a self portrait. This Australian painter lived in Paris for much of his career and a number of his paintings display the same label on the backs of their canvases as this oil sketch does.
